Based on a sermon preached at Cornerstone Chapel on 5/21/2017

Psalm 33:1-9 KJV

[1] Rejoice in the Lord , O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.

[2] Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

[3] Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

[4] For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.

[5] He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord .

[6] By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

[7] He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

[8] Let all the earth fear the Lord : let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

[9] For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

From before time, God has been speaking.  Of the approximately 40 times the Bible says, "God said"...10 of them are in Genesis the first chapter.

  • He spoke the world in existence.
  • God spoke to Abraham as a theophany.
  • Jacob had a vision.
  • He communicated to Joseph in a dream.
  • To David, God used the voice of a prophet.
  • He blessed His people through the preacher, Solomon.
  • He taught the disciples as a man.
  • To the Apostle Paul, He spoke in an audible voice.

God continues to speak to His people, but it we need to be sensitive how is God speaking and what He is saying:

1 Kings 19:9-14 KJV

[9] And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

[10] And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword;  and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

[11] And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord . And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord ; but the Lord was not in the wind (God spoke to Job in Job 38:1 out of a whirlwind): and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake (Hebrews 12:26 - God's voice shook the earth when He gave the Children of Israel the law):

[12] And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire (God spoke to Moses from the burning bush): and after the fire a still small voice.

We need to be sensitive to God's voice because we can give God credit for something that He did not say. Taking the Lord's name in vain is not using it as a cuss word, but using his name in when He is not involved.

God said...

Genesis 2:16-17 KJV

[16] And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

[17] But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Genesis 3:1-3 KJV

[1] Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

[2] And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

[3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Eve credited God with something that He did not say.  Mankind's fall can be attributed to the insensitivity to the very words of God.

So how does God speak to us today?  He can if He chooses to speak to us through the same communication methods that He chose in the scripture, but the most common method of communication between God and man is the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16 KJV

[16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

  • We need to read and study the scripture.

Psalm 119:10-12 KJV

[10] With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

[11] Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

[12] Blessed art thou, O Lord : teach me thy statutes.

John 5:39 KJV

[39] Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

[15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

  • God speaks to us through an impression

This is best described as an intense feeling that can not be shaken.

  • God speaks through the preaching and teaching of the Word

Romans 16:25-27 GW

[25] God can strengthen you by the Good News and the message I tell about Jesus Christ. He can strengthen you by revealing the mystery that was kept in silence for a very long time

[26] but now is publicly known. The everlasting God ordered that what the prophets wrote must be shown to the people of every nation to bring them to the obedience that is associated with faith.

[27] God alone is wise. Glory belongs to him through Jesus Christ forever! Amen.

  • God speaks through Gifts of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 KJV

[4] Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

[5] And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

[6] And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

[7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

[8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

[9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

[10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

[11] But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

But the question remains for each of us - What is God saying to you?

The list can continue, but chances are if you have been praying - God is talking.
