I would like to first wish my father a happy birthday. I am not sure if he reads this blog, but just in case I wanted to thank him for his guidance as my pastor and bishop. We all need mentors in our life that we can lean on to teach us the finer points of our faith and how to be a leader.
Although, we can often look at multiple people in our lives as examples of how to become a leader that people will follow. I believe that for many of us there is that one person that we would like to emulate. We can also look to education, reading and watching people from afar to accomplish and enhance our leadership style, but must remember "garbage in, garbage out". It may be a stretch to use this cliche' in the manner that I did, but I think the principle is there. Simply, we need to be careful of who and what we follow. The Bible explains to us in I Timothy what is expected of a pastor/leader:
1Timothy 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
1Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
1Timothy 3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
1Timothy 3:4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
1Timothy 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
1Timothy 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
1Timothy 3:7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
God is looking for men and women that have integrity and that are willing to conform to what He expects of a leader. Peter wrote that holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Religious leaders are a dime a dozen, but holy men of God are rare. Everyone has someone they follow, please be sure they are heading in the direction you want to go.
1Corinthians 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
