Tonight, I was in conversation and used the phrase we need to pull down the strong holds.  It is a phrase that I have often heard and have have used throughout my ministry, but what does it really mean?  I did a search and found that the term stronghold is not found in scripture, but strong hold is used eight times.  Each of the eight times, they are used in the Old Testament and they are follows...

2Samuel 5:7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David.

2Samuel 24:7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.

Isaiah 31:9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

Micah 4:8 And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.

Nahum 1:7 The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

Habbakuk 1:10 And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it.

Zechariah 9:3 And Tyrus did build herself a strong hold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.

The term strong hold is defined in Strong's as...

a net, or (abstractly) capture; also a fastness: - castle, defence, fort (-ress), (strong) hold, be hunted, net, snare, strong place.

There is little left for the imagination when it comes to what a strong hold was in the Old Testament, but does the term apply to us today?  It is apparent through the New Testament that we are in a spiritual warfare...

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

There is little doubt that the enemy has strengthened himself in certain places or strong holds, but we have the formula for victory.

Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Ephesians 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

As always, prayer is a key to pulling down the strong holds in our life and in geographic areas.  We need to make war on the floor and pull down strong holds.  It is time that we commit to pulling down the strong holds in the cities and counties so that we can impact our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  That is our focus and mission.  Always remembering...

Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
