How important is it for us to know that we were baptized properly? Does it matter what the preacher said over us when we were dunked? There are many churches that baptize differently, but let us take a look at the scripture...
Matthew 28:16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Matthew 28:17And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
Matthew 28:18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matthew 28:19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
I bolded the eleven disciples in verse 16 because I wanted you to see the audience for which Jesus was speaking. This is significant because we are going to look at the method for which they baptized.
First, Jesus said to baptize in the NAME of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Let us look at what the name is...
The name of the Father is Jesus...
Isaiah 9:6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
John 5:43I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
The name of the Son is Jesus...
Matthew 1:21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
The name of the Holy Ghost is Jesus....
John 14:26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
With the knowledge of who Jesus was, the disciples began to preach and baptize in the name of Jesus and this is found in multiple scriptures....
Acts 2:38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 8:16(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Acts 10:48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Acts 19:5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Romans 6:3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Galatians 3:27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
