Sermon at Cornerstone Chapel (9.14.08)...

I Corinthians 1:9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

(God’s Word Version) God faithfully keeps his promises…

Standing on the Promises of God

When I was a child and we sang hymns from a songbook, we sang a song that said…

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I'm standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God

The message of the song is simple.  He is God…He has made promises and you can be assured that His promises are true.  Throughout the scripture, the men and women of God understood His promises to be real and genuine. Hebrews 11 states…

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

The promises of God are as real as all that you can see and stronger as the most powerful force.  His promises cannot be broken by man or demon and no matter your circumstances remain true.  David wrote in the 23rd Psalms…

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Our world is full of those that have no direction or hope.  Their lonely existence is exacerbated by the sin that binds them.  They seek hope in a needle, in a bottle or in the arms of a stranger, but do not realize that their hope is found in the promises of God for the Word states…

Jeremiah 17:7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

From Genesis 1 through Revelations 22, the Bible is full of the promises of God.  It is the pleasure of every Christian to read these scriptures with an understanding that that God Almighty, the Holy One of Israel, the King of kings and the Lord of Lords has wrapped us in His promises giving us the hope that all men and women desire.  He promised the love of a Savior as He hung on a cross dying and guaranteed joy unspeakable through His resurrection.  Jesus stated in John 10…

9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

Booker T. Washington describes meeting an ex-slave from Virginia in his book Up From Slavery : "I found that this man had made a contract with his master, two or three years previous to the Emancipation Proclamation, to the effect that the slave was to be permitted to buy himself, by paying so much per year for his body; and while he was paying for himself, he was to be permitted to labor where and for whom he pleased.

"Finding that he could secure better wages in Ohio, he went there. When freedom came, he was still in debt to his master some three hundred dollars. Notwithstanding that the Emancipation Proclamation freed him from any obligation to his master, this black man walked the greater portion of the distance back to where his old master lived in Virginia, and placed the last dollar, with interest, in his hands.

In talking to me about this, the man told me that he knew that he did not have to pay his debt, but that he had given his word to his master, and his word he had never broken. He felt that he could not enjoy his freedom till he had fulfilled his promise."
When we stand on the promises of God, we can be certain they are true.  His Word is His bond and He has promised us eternal life, if we follow His commandments…
Revelations 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
The commandments of God are intertwined into the promises of God.  Obedience to God’s word is a prerequisite to His promises, but His Word gives us the strength to be overcomers and ultimately we can walk trough the gates of the city…

In the book of Acts the 2nd chapter, another promise was given…

(Amplified) 37 Now when they heard this they were stung (cut) to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles (special messengers), Brethren, what shall we do?
38 And Peter answered them, Repent (change your views and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it) and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself. [Isa. 57:19; Joel 2:32.]
