This is the transcript of the sermon preached at Cornerstone Chapel on Sunday, February 1st...

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

There is an old song that simply says…

OH, How I love Jesus
OH, How I love Jesus
OH, How I love Jesus
Because He first loved me

This simple song has a very strong message and it is the message of that song that I want to speak with you about this morning.

Love has many definitions…

The dictionary defines love as a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties

I have heard that love is when you are willing to die for someone else.

Perhaps, the most beautiful definition of love is found in the scripture…

 1 Corinthians 13:1 -8 (The Message Bible)
1 If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don't love, I'm nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. 2If I speak God's Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, "Jump," and it jumps, but I don't love, I'm nothing. 3-7If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don't love, I've gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I'm bankrupt without love.

   Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn't want what it doesn't have.
   Love doesn't strut,
   Doesn't have a swelled head,
   Doesn't force itself on others,
   Isn't always "me first,"
   Doesn't fly off the handle,
Doesn't keep score of the sins of others,
   Doesn't revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
   Puts up with anything,
   Trusts God always,
   Always looks for the best,
   Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

We so often concentrate on the fact that Jesus loves us.  We have bumper stickers and tee shirts that proclaim loud and strong the love of Jesus Christ for each of us.  We love to quote scriptures that says…

1 John 4
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

We understand that Jesus loves us because He died for you and I on the cross.

John 15
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

But, what about our love for Jesus Christ?  When it is not about us, but Him….how much do we love Him.

Do we love Him enough to be committed to Him?

Do we love Him enough to love another?

Do we love Him enough to pray to Hom?

Do we love Him enough to study His Word?

Do we love Him enough to die for Him?

Jesus in the scriptures puts the action behind our love for Him…

John 14

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
